Cherry Lumber
Cherry Lumber in Los Angeles
American cherry is one of the most sought-after domestic hardwoods for fine furniture, cabinetry, and millwork, and for good reason. Its warm reddish-brown tones deepen naturally with age and light exposure, developing a rich patina that only gets better over time. The grain is typically straight and fine, sanding to a glass-smooth finish that takes oil, lacquer, or polyurethane beautifully. At House of Hardwood, we keep cherry lumber in stock for woodworkers, cabinet shops, furniture makers, and contractors throughout Los Angeles.

Our Cherry Lumber Selection
We carry American black cherry (Prunus serotina) in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses, available in both rough-sawn and surfaced options. Board widths and lengths vary by shipment, and we do our best to maintain a consistent supply of clear, FAS-grade stock. For larger orders, specific dimensions, or requests for figured cherry with curly or quilted grain, we can place a special order and typically have it on the rack within a short lead time.
Why Woodworkers Choose Cherry Lumber
- Natural warmth and color development - Cherry starts as a light pinkish-brown and darkens to a deep reddish amber over time, giving finished pieces a living quality that improves with age
- Fine, workable grain - Straight and uniform grain machines, routes, and carves cleanly with minimal tearout, making cherry a favorite for detailed joinery, moldings, and hand-cut dovetails
- Smooth, polished finish - The tight pore structure accepts finishes evenly and buffs to a satin sheen without heavy grain filling or extensive prep work
- Versatile project range - Equally at home in Shaker-style furniture, contemporary cabinetry, turned bowls, cutting boards, and architectural trim
- Strong mid-range hardness - With a Janka rating of 950 lbf, cherry holds up well for furniture and cabinetry while remaining easy to work with both hand and power tools
Sizing
Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.
Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf
Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.
We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!
This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:
| Rough Thickness | Net Thickness (S2S) |
|---|---|
| 4/4 Lumber | 13/16" |
| 5/4 Lumber | 1 1/16" |
| 6/4 Lumber | 1 5/16" |
| 8/4 Lumber | 1 13/16" |
| 10/4 Lumber | 2 5/16" |
| 12/4 Lumber | 2 13/16" |
| 16/4 Lumber | 3 13/16" |
