Red Oak Lumber

Red Oak Lumber in Los Angeles

Red oak is the workhorse of American hardwoods and one of the most widely used species in furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and trim carpentry. Its bold, open grain pattern gives projects a classic look that works across traditional, craftsman, and modern styles. The wood accepts stain exceptionally well, making it easy to match existing finishes or dial in a specific tone from honey blonde to deep espresso. At House of Hardwood, we stock red oak lumber year-round for woodworkers, cabinet shops, general contractors, and DIYers across Los Angeles.

Our Red Oak Lumber Selection

We carry Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses, available in both rough-sawn and surfaced options. We maintain one of the deeper inventories of red oak in the yard given its consistent demand, with a range of widths and lengths to minimize waste on most projects. For large-volume orders, specific grading requirements, or quarter-sawn red oak with its distinctive ray fleck pattern, we can source exactly what you need with a quick turnaround.

Why Woodworkers Choose Red Oak Lumber

  • Bold, distinctive grain - The prominent cathedral and straight grain patterns give red oak a strong visual presence that defines the character of a finished piece
  • Outstanding stain absorption - The open pore structure takes stain deeply and evenly, offering more color flexibility than nearly any other domestic hardwood
  • Proven structural strength - With a Janka hardness of 1,290 lbf, red oak delivers excellent durability for flooring, stair treads, table tops, and other high-use surfaces
  • Wide availability and value - As one of the most abundant North American hardwoods, red oak offers reliable supply and strong pricing compared to species with similar performance
  • Easy machinability - Red oak rips, crosscuts, routes, and profiles cleanly with standard tooling, and it holds fasteners and glue joints well for both shop and site work

Sizing

Lumber sizing and board feet diagram

Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.

Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf

Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.

We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!

This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:

Rough ThicknessNet Thickness (S2S)

8/4 Lumber1 13/16"
