Wenge Lumber

Wenge Lumber in Los Angeles

Wenge is one of the darkest, densest hardwoods in commercial use - and one of the most visually distinctive. Native to Central Africa, wenge ranges from deep chocolate brown to nearly black, with bold partridge-like streaks of lighter tan that give the wood its unmistakable character. Combined with exceptional hardness, strength, and natural decay resistance, wenge is a standout choice for flooring, high-end furniture, musical instruments, turned objects, and architectural accents where dramatic dark tones are the goal. It’s frequently used as a more affordable alternative to ebony in furniture, cabinetry, and fretboard work. At House of Hardwood, we carry wenge lumber to serve woodworkers, furniture makers, luthiers, designers, and craftspeople across Los Angeles.

Our Wenge Lumber Selection

Our wenge lumber is available in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses in both rough-sawn and surfaced (S4S) options. We stock select and better grades with the deep color and coarse, straight grain the species is known for. Availability can vary with import cycles - ask our team about current stock, widths, and lengths.

Why Woodworkers Choose Wenge

  • Deep, dramatic color - Wenge’s near-black tones with partridge streaks create a bold visual statement unlike any other commercially available hardwood; a clear finish brings the color alive without any stain
  • Exceptional hardness - With a Janka rating of around 1,930 lbf, wenge is significantly harder than white oak and hickory, making it extremely durable for flooring, tabletops, and high-wear applications
  • Ebony alternative - Widely used as a cost-effective substitute for ebony in furniture accents, inlays, fretboards, and bass guitar bodies where deep black tones are desired
  • Dimensional stability - Once dried, wenge holds its shape well with minimal seasonal movement, making it a reliable choice for large panels, flooring, and furniture tops
  • Natural durability - Resistant to rot, decay, and insect attack, wenge performs well in demanding interior and protected exterior applications

Working with Wenge

Wenge’s density and coarse, open grain require some extra care. Splinters are notoriously sharp and can cause skin irritation - long sleeves and gloves are worth wearing during rough work, and dust collection plus a mask are recommended since the fine dust can be an irritant. Sharp carbide tooling cuts cleanly, and the wood glues, sands, and finishes well. Grain-filling produces the smoothest, glassiest final surface on furniture-grade pieces.

Sizing

Lumber sizing and board feet diagram

Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.

Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf

Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.

We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!

This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:

Rough ThicknessNet Thickness (S2S)

5/4 Lumber1 1/16"

8/4 Lumber1 13/16"
