Kiln Dried Lumber

Kiln Dried Lumber in Los Angeles

Kiln dried lumber is the foundation of quality woodworking and construction. By reducing moisture content in a controlled environment, kiln drying produces lumber that's more stable, less prone to warping and cracking, and ready to use the moment it hits your shop. Whether you're building cabinets, furniture, flooring, or trim, starting with properly dried material makes all the difference. At House of Hardwood, we carry a wide selection of kiln dried hardwoods and softwoods to serve woodworkers, cabinet shops, designers, and contractors across Los Angeles. In fact, other than our decking, all of our wood is kiln dried.

Our Kiln Dried Lumber Selection

We stock kiln dried lumber across a full range of domestic and exotic species - including white oak, walnut, maple, cherry, ash, poplar, mahogany, and more - in 4/4 through 12/4 thicknesses. Our material is dried to 6-8% moisture content, the industry standard for interior woodworking and fine furniture. Both rough-sawn and surfaced (S4S) options are available. Ask our team about specific species, thicknesses, and grades currently in stock.

Why Kiln Dried Lumber Matters

  • Dimensional stability - Properly kiln dried lumber resists warping, cupping, twisting, and seasonal movement far better than air-dried or green material
  • Ready to work - At 6-8% MC, kiln dried stock can go straight from our racks to your jointer and planer without months of acclimation
  • Stronger glue joints - Lower, consistent moisture content produces more reliable adhesion for panel glue-ups, joinery, and laminations
  • Reduced defects - Controlled drying minimizes checking, end splitting, and internal stress that can surface during milling
  • Pest and mold prevention - The kiln process eliminates insects and mold spores, giving you clean, safe material for interior use

Sizing

Lumber sizing and board feet diagram

Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.

Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf

Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.

We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!

This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:

Rough ThicknessNet Thickness (S2S)
4/4 Lumber13/16"
5/4 Lumber1 1/16"
6/4 Lumber1 5/16"
8/4 Lumber1 13/16"
10/4 Lumber2 5/16"
12/4 Lumber2 13/16"
16/4 Lumber3 13/16"

Our kiln dried inventory turns regularly as new material comes in. We recommend calling ahead or stopping by to check availability on specific species, thicknesses, and volumes - especially for larger project quantities.
