Ash Lumber
Ash Lumber in Los Angeles
Ash is one of the most versatile and underrated domestic hardwoods available, combining excellent strength, shock resistance, and a clean open grain that looks right at home in everything from farmhouse tables to modern minimalist cabinetry. The light cream-to-tan heartwood offers a neutral canvas that works beautifully with clear finishes, whitewash, or stain, and the species bends exceptionally well for curved work and steam-bent components. At House of Hardwood, we keep ash lumber in stock for woodworkers, furniture makers, cabinet shops, bat and tool handle makers, and contractors throughout Los Angeles.

Our Ash Lumber Selection
We carry white ash (Fraxinus americana) in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses, available in both rough-sawn and surfaced options. Board widths and lengths vary by shipment, and we work to keep a solid selection of clear, high-grade stock on hand. For larger production runs, specific dimension needs, or figured ash with curly or olive-toned heartwood streaking, we can place a special order and typically have material available within a short lead time.
Why Woodworkers Choose Ash Lumber
- Superior strength-to-weight ratio - Ash is stiff and strong without being heavy, which is why it has been the go-to wood for tool handles, baseball bats, and oars for generations
- Excellent shock absorption - Few domestic species handle repeated impact as well as ash, making it ideal for workbench tops, mallet heads, and sporting goods
- Clean, light aesthetic - The pale sapwood and light tan heartwood pair well with Scandinavian, contemporary, and transitional design styles where a bright, airy look is the goal
- Responsive to finish and color - The open grain takes stain evenly and pops under oil finishes, while the neutral base color means you can push ash toward almost any tone without fighting the wood's natural hue
- Outstanding bendability - Ash is one of the best domestic species for steam bending, making it a top pick for chair backs, curved laminations, and boat building
Sizing
Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.
Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf
Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.
We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!
This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:
| Rough Thickness | Net Thickness (S2S) |
|---|---|
| 4/4 Lumber | 13/16" |
| 5/4 Lumber | 1 1/16" |
| 6/4 Lumber | 1 5/16" |
| 8/4 Lumber | 1 13/16" |
| 10/4 Lumber | 2 5/16" |
| 12/4 Lumber | 2 13/16" |
| 16/4 Lumber | 3 13/16" |
