Mahogany Lumber
Mahogany Lumber in Los Angeles
Mahogany has been the gold standard for fine furniture and boatbuilding for centuries, and its reputation is well earned. The wood offers a rich reddish-brown color with a natural luster that seems to glow under a clear finish, and its interlocked grain produces ribbon-stripe figure when quartersawn that no other species quite replicates. It is remarkably stable once dried, resists warping and seasonal movement better than most hardwoods, and works like a dream with both hand and power tools. At House of Hardwood, we carry mahogany lumber for furniture makers, cabinet shops, luthiers, boat builders, and woodworkers across Los Angeles.

Our Mahogany Lumber Selection
We stock African mahogany (Khaya spp.) in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses in both rough-sawn and surfaced options. African mahogany delivers the classic mahogany color profile and working characteristics at a strong value. For projects that call for genuine Honduran mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), we can source it as a special order with a short lead time. Board widths and lengths vary by shipment, and we aim to keep quality clear stock on the rack at all times. For wider boards, specific thicknesses, figured ribbon-stripe material, or larger volume orders, let our team know and we’ll get you a timeline.
Why Woodworkers Choose Mahogany Lumber
- Timeless color and warmth - The natural reddish-brown heartwood deepens with age and light exposure, developing the classic patina that has defined high-end furniture for generations
- Outstanding dimensional stability - Mahogany moves less in response to humidity changes than nearly any other commonly available hardwood, making it the top choice for tabletops, panel doors, and instrument bodies
- Effortless workability - The medium density and straight-to-interlocked grain cuts, shapes, carves, and sands smoothly with minimal tearout, even on complex profiles and detailed moldings
- Excellent finishing qualities - The pore structure accepts stain, oil, shellac, and lacquer evenly, and the natural chatoyance produces depth and figure under clear coats that flat-grain species cannot match
- Proven marine and exterior performance - Mahogany’s natural resistance to rot and decay makes it a preferred species for boat trim, outdoor furniture, and entry doors where longevity matters
Sizing
Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.
Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf
Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.
We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!
This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:
| Rough Thickness | Net Thickness (S2S) |
|---|---|
| 4/4 Lumber | 13/16" |
| 5/4 Lumber | 1 1/16" |
| 6/4 Lumber | 1 5/16" |
| 8/4 Lumber | 1 13/16" |
| 10/4 Lumber | 2 5/16" |
| 12/4 Lumber | 2 13/16" |
| 16/4 Lumber | 3 13/16" |
