Purpleheart Lumber
Purpleheart Lumber in Los Angeles
Purpleheart is the only commercially available hardwood that turns a true, vivid purple. When freshly cut, the wood appears dull grayish-brown - but within hours of exposure to light and air, it transforms into a rich, saturated violet that no stain or dye can match. Combined with extreme hardness, excellent durability, and strong resistance to rot and insects, purpleheart is a standout choice for accent furniture, cutting boards, turnings, inlays, and any project where bold natural color takes center stage. At House of Hardwood, we carry purpleheart lumber to serve woodworkers, turners, furniture makers, designers, and craftspeople across Los Angeles.

Our Purpleheart Lumber Selection
Our purpleheart lumber is available in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses in both rough-sawn and surfaced (S4S) options. We stock select and better grades sourced from Central and South America, with the deep purple color and straight-to-interlocked grain this species is known for. Availability can vary with import cycles - ask our team about current stock, widths, and lengths.
Why Woodworkers Choose Purpleheart
- One-of-a-kind color - No other wood species produces purpleheart's natural violet tone; it's a true conversation piece in any project, from furniture accents to jewelry boxes
- Extreme hardness - With a Janka rating of around 2,520 lbf, purpleheart is significantly harder than hickory and most exotics, making it exceptionally dent-resistant for cutting boards, flooring accents, and tool handles
- Natural durability - Highly resistant to rot, decay, and insect attack, purpleheart performs well in both interior and exterior applications without chemical treatment
- Stunning contrast wood - Pairs dramatically with lighter species like maple, holly, and yellowheart in cutting boards, segmented turnings, marquetry, and mixed-wood designs
- Color management - A UV-inhibiting finish helps preserve the vibrant purple tone; without protection, the wood gradually mellows to a deeper brownish-purple over time, which many woodworkers find equally attractive
Working with Purpleheart
Purpleheart's extreme density can be hard on cutting edges - sharp carbide tooling is recommended. The wood can also generate heat during machining, which may temporarily bring out a brownish tone on freshly cut surfaces; brief exposure to sunlight will bring the purple back. It glues, sands, and finishes well with standard techniques. For projects where grain orientation matters, understanding end grain vs edge grain when buying hardwood boards can help you get the most from this striking species.
Sizing
Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.
Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf
Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.
We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!
This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:
| Rough Thickness | Net Thickness (S2S) |
|---|---|
| 4/4 Lumber | 13/16" |
| 5/4 Lumber | 1 1/16" |
| 6/4 Lumber | 1 5/16" |
| 8/4 Lumber | 1 13/16" |
| 10/4 Lumber | 2 5/16" |
| 12/4 Lumber | 2 13/16" |
| 16/4 Lumber | 3 13/16" |
