Zebrawood Lumber
Zebrawood Lumber in Los Angeles
Zebrawood - sometimes called zebrano - is one of the most visually striking hardwoods in the world. Native to West Africa, zebrawood is prized for its bold, parallel stripes of light golden-yellow and deep chocolate brown that run along the length of the board, creating an unmistakable pattern that gives the species its name. Combined with solid hardness, reliable workability in the right hands, and a distinctive natural figure that needs no embellishment, zebrawood is a favorite for accent furniture, veneers, marquetry, turned objects, and automotive and marine interior trim. At House of Hardwood, we carry zebrawood lumber to serve woodworkers, furniture makers, designers, and craftspeople across Los Angeles. Our Zebrawood Lumber Selection
Our zebrawood lumber is available in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses in both rough-sawn and surfaced (S4S) options. We stock select and better grades with the dramatic striped figure and interlocked grain the species is known for. Availability can vary with import cycles - ask our team about current stock, widths, and lengths.
Why Woodworkers Choose Zebrawood
- Unmistakable striped figure - No other hardwood delivers zebrawood’s bold light-and-dark banding; quarter-sawn boards show the most dramatic parallel stripes, while flat-sawn material produces wavier, more organic patterns
- Strong accent species - A small amount of zebrawood goes a long way; it’s ideal for drawer fronts, tabletops, veneer panels, jewelry boxes, and high-contrast inlay work
- Good hardness - With a Janka rating of around 1,575 lbf, zebrawood is harder than white oak and stands up well to furniture-grade wear
- Luxury interior favorite - Long associated with high-end automotive dashboards, yacht interiors, and custom millwork where a singular visual impact is the goal
- Excellent veneer species - Zebrawood is one of the most popular decorative veneers in the world; solid lumber pairs beautifully with matching veneer faces for dimensional detail
Working with Zebrawood
Zebrawood’s interlocked grain can tear out if dulled tooling is used - sharp carbide blades and light passes produce the cleanest cuts. The open grain benefits from grain-filling before finishing if a glass-smooth surface is desired. The wood glues well and takes standard finishes cleanly; a clear finish lets the natural contrast between light and dark bands take center stage without any stain or dye.
Sizing
Here at the House Of Hardwood, we sell most of our lumber by volume, using Board Feet.
Volume = Thickness" x Width" x Length" / 144 = bf
Importantly, the hardwood measuring system bases the thickness based on rough cutting done at the lumber mill, so all fractions indicate the ROUGH thickness.
We sell our hardwood S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) – This means the boards have been planed down from their rough cut form to be flat. The edges are still not straight at this point, but we can straighten them up for you!
This S2S operation removes 3/16" therefore it is important to note net thicknesses:
| Rough Thickness | Net Thickness (S2S) |
|---|---|
| 4/4 Lumber | 13/16" |
| 5/4 Lumber | 1 1/16" |
| 6/4 Lumber | 1 5/16" |
| 8/4 Lumber | 1 13/16" |
| 10/4 Lumber | 2 5/16" |
| 12/4 Lumber | 2 13/16" |
| 16/4 Lumber | 3 13/16" |
