Custom Fireplace Mantels

Custom Fireplace Mantels in Los Angeles

A fireplace mantel sets the tone of a room. It draws the eye from the moment you walk in, and the wood you choose, the finish you put on it, and the way it sits against the wall matter as much as the firebox itself. At House of Hardwood, we build custom fireplace mantels for homeowners, builders, designers, and remodelers across Los Angeles, milled from premium domestic and exotic hardwoods or cut from solid timber stock.

We have been operating out of our Wellesley Avenue yard since 1947, and mantels are one of the most frequent custom projects to come through our shop. Bring us your firebox dimensions, the wall opening, and any reference photos, and our team will work through species, construction, finish, and mounting with you.

What We Build

Our custom mantel work covers the range of formats found in Southern California homes and projects:

  • Single-beam timber mantel shelves cut from solid stock and hand-finished
  • Box mantel shelves built around a hidden frame for oversized visual presence at lower weight
  • Live-edge slab mantels with natural waney edges left intact
  • Distressed timber mantels with hand-hewn texture and aged patina
  • Floating modern mantels in walnut, white oak, or maple with hidden steel mounts
  • Outdoor mantels in ipe, teak, or Spanish cedar for patio fireplaces and pizza ovens

Every piece is milled to your final dimensions, with corbel and bracket pockets, mounting channels, and any cable or sconce pass-throughs cut in shop.

Species We Recommend for Mantels

Species selection comes down to the look you are after and how the mantel will read against your surround material (stone, tile, brick, plaster, or metal). A few of the species we build most often:

  • Walnut - Rich chocolate heartwood and straight grain. The most-requested species for transitional and modern interiors where the mantel is meant to feel intentional and refined.
  • White Oak - Versatile across styles. Reads clean and modern in quartersawn or rift-sawn cuts, or rustic and substantial as a solid timber beam with a wire-brushed finish.
  • Old-Growth Douglas Fir - One of our most popular timber mantel choices. Tight vertical grain, warm amber tone, and a structural look that pairs naturally with stone surrounds and craftsman or lodge interiors.
  • Hickory - Bold color contrast between heartwood and sapwood. The right call for rustic, mountain, or farmhouse builds.
  • Cherry - Warm reddish-amber tones that deepen with age. Traditional and transitional designs.
  • Mahogany and Sapele - Formal, deep reddish-brown. Classic for traditional, Spanish revival, and Tudor-style homes. See how Sapele and Mahogany compare for SoCal projects.
  • Cedar - Aromatic, lightweight, and naturally weather-resistant for outdoor fireplaces and covered patios.
  • Live-Edge Slabs - Walnut, claro walnut, sycamore, oak, and other species in single-slab format, selected by hand from our slab inventory.

If you have a species in mind that we don’t have on the rack, we can usually source it on a short turnaround.

Construction Approaches

How a mantel is built matters as much as the species. We typically work in one of three approaches:

  • Solid timber - Cut from a single piece of thick stock. The most authentic look for rustic, lodge, and craftsman interiors, with all four sides showing real wood. Weight scales quickly with size, so we build solid timber mantels in dimensions your wall framing can carry.
  • Box construction - A hollow shell built around a hidden 2×4 or steel frame, faced with matched grain on three or four sides. Box mantels deliver the visual weight of a 10×12 beam at a fraction of the actual weight, which makes them easier to mount on standard walls.
  • Live-edge slab - A feature piece where the natural edge of the tree becomes part of the design. We seal and stabilize the waney edge and finish the slab to your spec.

Custom wood paneling and wainscoting can be sourced from the same stock to tie the room together.

Finish, Distressing, and Texture

How you finish a mantel shapes the personality of the room. We finish in shop or supply unfinished and ready for your finisher. Common options:

  • Hardwax oil for a natural, low-sheen look with real hand-feel
  • Polyurethane in satin, semi-gloss, or gloss
  • Conversion varnish for maximum durability and chemical resistance
  • Stained finishes matched to existing millwork, flooring, or cabinetry
  • Wire-brushed texture to raise the grain and add tactile depth
  • Hand-hewn or adzed faces for a true reclaimed-timber look
  • Light or heavy distressing with checks, knots, and edge wear added intentionally
  • Ebonized finishes for modern dark-wood aesthetics

For mantels installed above active wood-burning or gas fireplaces, the finish should be heat-tolerant and the piece should be set with code-appropriate clearance from the firebox.

Sizing, Clearances, and Lead Times

Most mantel shelves are built in the 4″ to 8″ thickness range and 6″ to 14″ depth range, sized to the wall opening and the surround. Solid timber mantels can run thicker where the design calls for visual weight. Box mantels can scale larger without becoming difficult to handle.

Clearances above a firebox vary by jurisdiction, fuel type, and whether the firebox is masonry, prefab, or direct-vent gas. Your installer or local building department is the final word on required clearances, and we are happy to coordinate with them on dimensions. For related code considerations, see our guide on whether wood projects pass California fire inspections.

Lead times depend on species availability and finish complexity. Simple mantel shelves in stocked species often ship in one to two weeks. Distressed timber mantels and slab-matched runs typically take three to six weeks. Special-order species or reclaimed-look finishes can extend the timeline. We give you an honest schedule up front so you can coordinate with your GC, mason, or installer.

Sustainability Options

For projects with green building requirements or client sustainability standards, we carry FSC certified stock in select species and can source additional certified material to order. The certified lumber looks and machines exactly like our conventional stock, with the verified chain of custody documented for your file.

Who We Build For

We work with custom home builders, remodel contractors, interior designers, architects, masons, fireplace installers, and homeowners. Our team can spec from architectural drawings or work from rough opening measurements and reference photos. We have built mantels for hillside modern builds, Spanish revival restorations, craftsman bungalows, lodge-style cabins, and minimalist new construction across Los Angeles.

We do not handle on-site installation, but we coordinate closely with your installer on mounting hardware, hidden cleat design, and finish handoff so the piece installs cleanly.

Start Your Mantel Project

Bring your firebox and wall opening dimensions, your material, and any inspiration photos to the yard and we will scope the project on the spot. If you are still in design, our team can recommend species, thickness, and construction based on the room and the fireplace. We also work on custom wood countertops and wood bookcases and built-ins if you have other millwork needs.
